Description

Description

The objective of the Sustainable Management of Fish Resources Project is to empower communities to reduce fishing pressure on the fish stocks supporting the central coastal fisheries of Senegal. There are four components to the project. The first component is the co-management of coastal fisheries. The objective of this component is to implement co-management systems to improve the governance of the coastal fisheries for a more sustainable use of the resources. The second component is the rehabilitation of ecosystems essential for coastal fisheries. The objective of this component is to contribute to the rehabilitation of ecosystems essential to the coastal fisheries, by establishing Protected Fishing Zones (ZPPs) in association with artificial reefs, in order to help regenerate the natural resources, and by creating market mechanisms to encourage sustainable management of the ecosystems. The third component is the poverty alleviation measures for fishing communities and alternative livelihoods for fishers, fish processors, and fish transporters. The objective of this component is to offset any negative socio-economic impacts for targeted fishing communities resulting from co-management initiatives or management plans (including the introduction of instruments such as ZPPs, artificial reefs, eco-labels, etc.). Finally, the fourth component is the institutional strengthening for fisheries management, project management, and monitoring and evaluation. The objective of this component is to support the ministry of maritime economy to manage and implement the project in the context of the letter of sector policy, and to monitor and evaluate results.
