Description
Description | Core problem In Zambia, only a very small proportion of the population is connected to the national electricity grid (an average of 30%, in rural areas as little as 4%). In the Southern Division, only 10% of the population has access to electrical energy. In addition, the outdated transmission and distribution infrastructure means that some regions are generally inadequately supplied. Regular planned and unplanned load shedding makes it difficult for even connected customers to use electricity reliably. The current generation capacity and the distribution and transmission infrastructure, which is in great need of rehabilitation, are therefore far from sufficient to cover the constantly growing electricity demand in the long term. In the past, necessary investments in the electricity infrastructure have often not been made due to ZESCO's poor economic situation. Module objective Sustainable improvement of the energy supply for the population and SMEs in the Southern Division (South, West, Central and Eastern Provinces) of Zambia. Key outputs Energy efficiency in the grid and the sustainable reduction of technical faults are increased, which also contributes to greater security of supply. In addition, the network capacity and the electrification rate will be increased. Target group The target group of the project are all current users of the electricity grid in the Southern Division as well as all households, MSMEs and social institutions that apply for new connections to the electricity grid as part of the rehabilitation and expansion measures. The indirect target group are all users of public facilities such as schools and health stations. Contribution to the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda The FC module supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contributes to the goals SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 13 (climate action). |
