Sustainable sanitation in small settlements of the Danube Region

65% of the total population in the Danube Region is not connected to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The quality and efficiency of wastewater services vary widely within the region and are mostly below international benchmarks. Plans exist for equipping small settlements with WWTP in the near future. The types of treatment technologies selected for these future investments have a major effect on water quality and nutrient management. The main objective of the overall SANDANUBE project is to bridge the gap between legislation and the current practice and to improve water quality for the Danube Region by using the most appropriate technologies. START funding was used to identify funding options for the overall project, to analyse partners and stakeholders and to establish a survey on the existing wastewater-treatment legislation. A workshop and a study visit were organised and the overall project proposal for EU-programmes such as Life, Horizon 2020 etc. was elaborated.
