Description

Description

The aim of the project, which was designed as an open program, is to strengthen the sustainability of public transport systems in selected Brazilian urban and metropolitan regions. Particularly climate-effective and sustainable public transport systems are financed through the state-owned Brazilian development bank BNDES. The BNDES has passed on the loan funds to the private operators of the public transport systems. The two funded projects are the VLT Carioca - the tram system in Rio de Janeiro - and the Metro Bahia - the metro system in Salvador de Bahia. The BNDES is the borrower and program sponsor. The target group of the project is the Brazilian population, especially the users of the VLT Carioca and Metro Bahia and residents of the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia. In addition to financing the transport systems, the BNDES was supported in the application and further development of a tool for determining and monitoring the climate impacts of transport projects and in the development of a technology guide for the selection of means of transport in medium-sized Brazilian cities for the Brazilian Ministry of Cities. The project supports Brazil in using energy resources more efficiently and thus contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and global climate protection. It thus fits into the target structure of German cooperation for sustainable development with Brazil with a focus on energy.
