Description

Description

India's vulnerability to climate change is already evident in high flood risks, extreme heat waves and increasing water shortages, with people in cities being particularly affected. Urban infrastructure must increasingly be planned and implemented according to climate-adapted standards in order to be sufficiently resilient to the risks and consequences of climate change and to be able to effectively reduce the effects of climate change. The aim of this thematic project is to increase the climate resilience of selected cities and at the same time achieve a quantitative and qualitative improvement in urban supply structures with regard to the provision of basic municipal services. Increased climate resilience is to be achieved through investments in infrastructure measures that address increasing climate risks. Flood risks are mitigated by investments in blue and green infrastructure, flood and erosion protection and in the area of waste management, among other things. The effects of extreme heat can also be addressed by blue and green infrastructure and by an improved water supply. Increasing water shortages are countered by adequate wastewater disposal, recycling and measures to maintain supply networks, among other things. In addition, the project will contribute to climate protection and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through investments in climate-friendly transport infrastructure, waste management and green infrastructure. The project is being designed as a thematic project in order to be able to respond to current and future needs in the best possible and flexible way. Regionally-centered approaches are planned at locations yet to be determined, which are to be implemented by already known and experienced project sponsors. Vulnerable population groups and in particular the needs of women will be given special consideration.
