This project supports the Dominican authorities, at both local and national levels, in their engagement in transformational actions for a more sustainable urban mobility. It will continue the ongoing LACIF support in the sector, preparing mass transport infrastructure projects, particularly through the completion of detailed technical studies and studies on institutional and financial structuring. Besides metro and cable car projects, the Dominican Republic has limited experience with projects on other modes (BRT, tramway) and PPP structuring. Therefore, it is important for the development of these new transport projects, considering gender equality and the disability dimension in terms of benefits and risks, needs, constraints and differential access. This technical cooperation is also associated with a project to increase the capacity of line 2 of the Santo Domingo metro, financed by an AFD loan. The project enhances the capacities of:INTRANT (National Institute for Transit and Land Transport) to implement on-the-ground measures that have already been studied (paratransit, active modes, traffic and parking management, ticketing interoperability and fare integration).FITRAM (Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System of the Dominican Republic) in the completion of technical, environmental and social, institutional, and financial studiesOPRET (Office for the Reorganisation of Transport), owner and operator of the Santo Domingo metro, in planning the modernization of its metro train fleet and signalling system.The Technical support programme for the development of sustainable urban mobility in the Dominican Republic is aligned with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, contributing to the development of the urban transport network in Santo Domingo and other Dominican cities. It also contributes to an effective climate resilient low-carbon economy and society, which is part of the European Green Deal.
