Description | In May 2007, the Russian energy monopoly, RAO UES, sold its 49% stake in Sverdlovenergosbyt to the Russia-based Integrated Energy Systems (IES). Sverdlovenergosbyt was a major energy distribution company supplying about 92% of all electricity needs of the Sverdlovsk Oblast with a population of about 1.3 million. The company was spun off its parent “SverdlovkEnergo” in April 2005. The company was the only electricity provider with the right to purchase electricity for the Oblast on the wholesale market. In 2006, the company purchased about 42 billion KW hours on the wholesale market. The shares were sold through a tender process but the Integrated Energy Systems faced no competition and bought the shares at the ask price of US$44.6 million. IES was a private company founded in December 2002 to implement strategic investment programs in the Russian electricity market.
