Swaziland - NONDVO multipurpose dam feasibility study

This project intends to assess the feasibility for the construction of a multipurpose dam, whose main objective is to store water in order to provide potable water to the two growing cities of Mbabane and Manzini. With the ultimate aim to reduce poverty and increase economic growth, the project will improve availability of water resources for the local populations livelihood as well as their productive activities. Therefore, the project is of utmost importance for the country and fits into its national water resources development objectives. It is coherent with the Africa Water Vision and with SADC planning documents. It is also aligned with the priorities of the AWF Strategic Plan 2012-2016 and the Bank’s Long-Term Strategy 2013-2022. The project is technically opportune and justified, given the foreseen domestic water supply shortage for the two cities of Mbabane and Manzini in the near future. The project includes the following components: - Feasibility study and detailed design; - Environmental and Social Impact Assessment; - Climate change resilience assessment, transboundary issues, PPP and financing strategy; - Project management, including panel of experts. The total estimated cost of the project is estimated at € 2,800,000 excluding taxes and duties (but including approx. 5% contingency reserve). The overall duration is 27 months.
