Description

Description

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the realisation of the EU and national objectives for high-speed digital access for all households and companies, by strengthening the digital connections between Sweden and Denmark. This is done by deployment of a new high speed submarine optical fiber cable between northern Jutland, Denmark and Kungsbacka, south of Gothenburg in Sweden. The cable will have a large number of fibres, which will be substantially more efficient than the two older cables in the area, which have low capacity and have reached the end of designed life. The length of the unrepeated cable will be about 113 km of which 91 km is the submarine part. GlobalConnect intends to deploy “Smart Cables” technology that enable observation and monitoring of cable displacements, movements, and vibrations using the optical transmission channel as a sensing probe. The project aims for deployment of improved strategic networks contributing to the Digital Global Gateway Strategy of the EU, by improvement of the backbone capacity, diversity and redundancy between Sweden and northern Denmark. This will significantly improve the redundancy for digital networks in the North Sea region and at the same time lower the vulnerability of the current backbone infrastructure. The project does not include any activation of network devices that transfer any data packages, it is passive dark fibre. The project is mainly an enabler for enterprises and telecom operators that want to extend their network offers by adding active equipment to the GlobalConnect passive network infrastructure for long haul, low latency, high performance communication.
