Description

Description

The project aims to improve the long-haul telecommunication infrastructure between Sweden and Estonia, digital infrastructure on the islands, and fostering social and economic development and cooperation between the countries and the region in a more secure way. A submarine fibre cable connection will be built between Gotland (Sweden) and Tallin (Estonia) via Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, three islands in the Baltic Sea that belong to Sweden and Estonia respectively. The sea cable will thereby establish a diverse route with a high fibre count (192 fibres) in view of attracting private companies, academic networks, government bodies, defence alliances. The sea cable between Gotland and mainland Estonia will have a length of 200-250 km depending on the exact location of route. The project includes the design, permitting, installation, testing, and operation of the submarine cable system, as well as the integration with the existing terrestrial networks. The submarine cable will support diversity and provide long-term capacity needs between eastern Europe and the Scandinavian countries as well as the European continent for any types of data. The project will also contribute to the EU’s digital agenda and green transition, by aligning with the goals of the EU-Gigabit society and support Saarema and Gotland (included under the EC 30 renewable islands for 2030 initiative), to achieve complete energy independence through 100% renewable sources by 2030, while improving the subsea fibre connection between Gotland, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa as well as with other islands and mainland areas in Estonia, Sweden and central Europe.
