Description

Description

This project’s general objective is to mitigate consumer harms by: 1) strengthening the skills and knowledge of vulnerable consumers when it comes to protecting themselves from unfair online commercial practices, and by 2) enhancing vulnerable consumers’ awareness of what rights and avenues for redress are available to them. The project will achieve these general objectives by achieving five specific objectives: 1) Create a new awareness-raising campaign with info on the rights of consumers, and hands-on guides to smart and safe online shopping, both using easy-to-read and comprehend Swedish. 2) Augment already published materials like position papers, reports and guides with easy-to-read and comprehend Swedish versions, summarising the main points. 3) Author easy-to-read and comprehend Swedish summaries of all press releases, position papers and opinion pieces that are published by our organisation during the duration of the project. 4) Organise focus group workshops consisting of consumers with a migrant background and focus group workshops consisting of people with a cognitive disability. 5) Organise an advisory group consisting of Swedish news outlets writing in languages other than Swedish, actors organising people with migrant background or people with cognitive disabilities, and local consumer advisors. Much of the existing material available in easy-to-read and comprehend Swedish is focused on basic consumer rights and basic shopping scenarios. As highlighted in reports, the markets where consumers find themselves today are increasingly complex and characterized by information overload and unfair commercial practices. Therefore, basic information about consumer rights is not enough to equip consumers for the modern marketplace. This is especially true for vulnerable groups of consumers – such as people with migration background and people with cognitive disabilities – who are more likely to fall victim to unfair practices.
