Description
Description | The Lake Victoria Watsan Mwanza Project covers the three largest towns of the Tanzanian Lake Victoria shoreline: Mwanza, Bukoba and Musoma, as well as three satellite communities Misungwi, Magu and Lamadi. The initiative is dedicated to improving the water supply, sewerage, wastewater treatment and sanitation of more than half of a million person in these cities. The scope of the Project is ranging from studies, design, tendering, capacity building, budgeting, to supervision of Works and Implantation. A large programme of sanitation for Mwanza’s informal areas is also included in the Project, as are water and hygiene facilities for 250 schools.Musoma and Bukoba are already benefiting from investment programmes for water supply, and this Project complements these investments with the initiation of centralised wastewater systems. The TA will assist the different water supply and sanitation authorities (WSSAs) involved in the project in planning, implementing and operating sustainably as well as increasing their understanding of the water quality trends of the lake. WSSAs in Bukoba and Musoma are faced with shortfalls in human resources and financing and require assistance for better management of billing and collection as well as improved coverage of operation and maintenance costs. The TA will also assist the updating of the utilities’ business plans with a view to establishing sanitation tariffs that cover costs and contribute to the long-term financial sustainability of the utilities. The TA will ensure that all measures are undertaken as part of a coordinated planning approach.
