Description | The Tajpur deep sea port project is a long-delayed Rs 25,000 crore infrastructure venture in West Bengal, India. It aims to reduce pressure on the Kolkata dock system, improve maritime infrastructure in eastern India, enable direct berthing of large vessels, reduce reliance on transshipment hubs, lower logistics costs, and decongest Kolkata and Haldia ports. The project was initially explored in partnership with the Kolkata Port Trust and later decided to be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) route. A tender for the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) of the greenfield port was cancelled in December 2025 due to lack of minimum bids. The project is now expected to depend on the policy direction of the new BJP government in West Bengal and its ability to attract strategic investors. |
