The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival or PÖFF in Estonian) is one of the biggest film festivals in the world and definitely in Northern Europe. Since 2014 it has been accredited by FIAPF as a competitive festival without any geographical and thematic borders. Notably, the budgetary capacity of PÖFF is limited, compared to other film festivals at A-statute. However, thanks to its lean and effective solutions, PÖFF has demonstrated over the years the ability to grow creatively and size-wise, contributing significantly to the local and regional agenda, as well as to the European film industry at a larger scale. The festival has achieved recognition for its focus on independent and unique authors’ voices in cinema, an egalitarian curation policy mixing up-and-coming vs established filmmakers, and a wide programming platform addressing the whole life cycle of the audience. The special attention is on European works and filmmakers from underrepresented territories.
