The government of Indonesia divested 49% of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III to P&O Ports Australia in April 1999. P&O won the tender with a bid of US$173 million. Pelindo III operates the Tanjung Empas port in Semarang and Central Java, the Banjarmas in port in South Kalimantan, the Benoa port in Bali, and the Cilacap port in the southern coast of Central Java. The company committed to raise the throughput of TPS from 740,000 TEUs to 2.2 million TEUs by 2005. The planned investments amount to over US$300 million within the first 10 years of the concession. After the 20 years concession period, the facility will be returned to state ownership. In 2006, DP World became the major project sponsor and port operator following its acquisiton of P&O Ports' global portfolio.
