Tanjung Priok is the country's main port for international trade. This port handles 65% of imports and 45% of exports in volume to and from Indonesia. In the past 5 years the flows of containerized goods in Tanjung Priok have grown 20% annually. Since the operation of the conventional container terminal owned by Pelindo II in 1978, loading and unloading of containerized goods have continued to increase via Tanjung Priok. Terminal construction began in mid-1995. After a trial run for several months the Koja container terminal (TPK) in Jakarta was commissioned by President Suharto in March 1998. The terminal, located near the Tanjung Priok port is the first modem container terminal in the country. The terminal has been built by PT Humpuss Terminal Petikemas, under the Operation Cooperation (KSO) scheme with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Pelindo II) as the port authority. The terminal includes a 450 meter long quay with a 14 meters LWS deep port basin, container open storage facility over a 15 hectare lot of land and 5 units of crane and 20 units of transtainer. The first phase of the Koja terminal, which has a 600,000 TEUs capacity, was estimated to cost about US$ 111.4 million. PT Humpuss Terminal Petikemas (HTP), a subsidiary of Humpuss Group, delayed construction of the second phase of Koja Container Terminal (TPK). It was scheduled to begin in 1998 and completed in 1999. However, the persistent economic crisis has trimmed down the export-import volume so that the occupancy ratio of Koja Container Terminal I is only 40%. In July 2000, Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) bought out PT HTP's 48% share in Koja Container Terminal. As of Dec. 31, 2008, HPH - a joint venture of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd (HWL) (80%) and PSA Corp. (20%) since 2006 - had a 45% equity interest in Koja Container Terminal, equating to a 36% share for HWL and a 9% share for PSA Corp. The remainder of the equity (55%) was owned by Pelindo II. In 1996, loading and unloading of containerized cargoes in Tanjung Priok totaled 1.4 million TEUs. Loading and unloading of international cargoes in Tanjung Priok totaled 42.3 million tons and 54.2 % of which were containerized cargoes.
