Description | The 2.5-MW Tanwat Wood-Fired Power Plant was being developed by the Tanganyika Wattle (Tanwat) Company Ltd. Tanwat was a joint venture between Globeleq, the power sector subsidiary of the Commonwealth Development Corporation (UK) (84%) and the Tanzania Development Finance Corporation (TDFL - 16%). The plant was to not only use wood but also waste for fuel. MechMar Corp Bhd of Malaysia was the primary contractor for this project. The project cost was estimated at 4 million pounds sterling (US$6 million). The wood-fired plant was completed during 1995. Although part of the power was to be used for Tanwat's agricultural and industrial interests, surplus energy was sold to the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) which resold power to Njombe residents.
