Description
Description | The proposed project will assist the Government in its efforts to restore the severly damaged road infrastructure to the pre-“El Nino” condition level and thereby support the country’s socio-economic recovery programme. The unforeseen heavy “El-Nino” rains between October 1997 and April 1998 has severely damaged the transport infrastructure, in particular roads, causing thus disruption to services and communications. The project corridors cover eleven regions of the country in which the “El-Nino” rains affected the road infrastructure with varying degrees depending on the nature of the road. The affected corridors are (i) Lake Victoria circuit corridor; (ii) Mid-west corridor; (iii) Southern corridor and (iv) Western corridor. The repairs and restoration of affected sections of the important road infrastructure corridors has been accorded top priority by the government, to provide immediate services within the regions and to the capital. The project consists in the repairs of the road sections in the four trunk route corridors (about 2,634 km) affected by “El-Nino” phenomena in eleven regions including minor bridges, culverts, and embankments. The estimated total cost is UA 10.85 million. |
