Tanzania - Rural Electrification Study

The Tanzania Rural Electrification Study is justified because the country does not yet have a cost-effective and sustainable framework for planning and implementing the rural electrification projects in the country. Without the Rural Electrification Study including the energy resource data and information that would be generated by the study and the associated identification of projects, it would not possible for the Government to undertake the business with respect to provision of electrification services to rural areas. The Government is expected to take over the rural electrification business from TANESCO after its privatization in early 2004. The study carries out in two phases as stated below: (i) Program formulation for provision of electrification services to unelectrified rural areas; (ii) Preparation of feasibility of electrification projects for rural areas/towns conforming to the definition of rural development projects within the framework of Phase I. It will provide the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM) with the Rural Electrification Master Plan, technological alternatives, choices, and solutions leading to the formulation of rural electrification programme. The Rural Electrification Programme shall include commercial and rural development electricity projects, which can be swiftly implemented by the private sector, Government, Community Based Organizations, and Non Governmental Organizations.
