Tanzania - Zanzibar Water and Sanitation Project

The Zanzibar Water Supply and Sanitation Project is a new phase of the AfDB's intervention in the water sector in Zanzibar after the rural water supply project completed in the early 1990s. This is an operation covering several aspects of Zanzibar's water and sanitation sector. This project was partially completed when it was stopped and the remainder of the loan cancelled due to the Zanzibar government's insistence that national water supply should remain a free public service, as it has been since 1981, in contradiction with the terms of the loan agreement. The project, jointly prepared with UN Habitat, includes support for institutional development, urban water supply and sanitation and water resources management. It will be implemented over a four-year period at a total cost of UA 33.30 million. The project will make overall improvements to public health in the project areas, reduce waterborne diseases, and promote environmental sustainability. It will contribute to poverty reduction and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
