Description
Description | TAT-8 was the first transoceanic fibreoptic cable system across the Atlantic, operational from 1988 to 2002. It is currently being pulled up from the seabed and sent for recycling by Subsea Environmental Services, a company specializing in cable recovery and recycling. The operation involves a diesel-electric cable-recovery vessel, the MV Maasvliet, which docks in the Portuguese port of Leixões to offload recovered cable. The recovered cable is then transported to South Africa for further processing and recycling of materials such as steel, copper, and polyethylene. |
