Tau Power acquired equity stakes in four CHP stations in east Kazakhstan in October 1997. The stations were the 240 MW Ust-Kamenongorsk TETS (heat and power station), the 50MW Leninogorsk TETS, the 50MW Sogrinsk TETS, and the 10 MW Semipalatinsk TETS. Tau Power was originally created as a joint venture between AES Corp (85%) and Suntree Power of Israel (15%). Tau Power paid US$2.5 million for the shares of the CHP companies. The company also committed to pay US$4 million in back wages. In 2000, the capacity of the plants was as follows: Ust-Kamenongorsk TETS (1464MW), Leninogorsk TETS (418MW), Sogrinsk TETS (349MW), and Semipalatinsk TETS (840). In November 2002, AES sold the Leninogorsk plant to Maverick Development Corp. [United States], and the Semipalatinsk plant to Karazhira Power, owned by coal company Semei-Komir. As of December 2003 the capacity of the plants was as follows: Ust-Kamenongorsk TETS (1356MW), Sogrinsk TETS (301MW) As of December 2008, the Tau Power portfolio of projects was wholly owned by AES, and consisted of Ust-Kamenongorsk TETS (1,354 MW) and Sogrinsk TETS (301 MW). 2000-2011 capacity from AES ARs.
