Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), together with two of its subsidiaries, Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) in Jamaica and Arawak Cement Company Limited (ACCL) in Barbados, are the leading producers and dominant suppliers of bulk and bagged cement in Caricom (the economic grouping of fifteen Caribbean states, primarily English-speaking, with a total population of approximately six million). With combined capacity of 1.7 million tons per annum (“tpa”), the three plants produce for their domestic markets and export (TCL and ACCL) to other Caricom markets. The proposed project focuses on improving cost competitiveness and upgrading capacity at CCCL in Jamaica to become a stronger regional player, better able to compete with both importers and multi-national competitors. In Jamaica (CCCL) the proposed project includes the installation of a new modern dry process kiln with 4-stage preheater/calciner (2,800 tpd clinker). The existing energy-inefficient wet technology kiln will be closed down after the new kiln is installed. The project will also include installation of a new roller mill, a new clinker cooler, a new bag filter for the kiln and the roller mill, and a few ancillary investments upstream and downstream the kiln. The project will be designed according to best practice levels of power and fuel consumption, thereby leading to substantial reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions.
