Teacher Education Improvement Project

The objective of the Teacher Education Improvement Project is to improve the competencies and skills of class teachers (i.e., those teaching grades one to four) in West Bank and Gaza schools, and in doing so to contribute to enhancing student learning in primary schools. There are three components to the project. The first component of the project is strengthening 'school based practice' of pre-service teacher education programs. This component will support the establishment of a system of context-based practical experiences in schools that will become a central part of the teacher education program of studies. The second component of the project is upgrading academic and professional teaching qualification of under-qualified class teachers. This component will upgrade teaching skills and competencies of under-qualified teachers in grades one through four, thereby bringing teacher qualifications to an equivalent of a professional certification. The third component of the project is project management and implementation support. This component will support to the Minister of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) and its line ministries responsible for project implementation and the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) of the current World Bank-funded Tertiary Education Project which will be responsible for performing the fiduciary functions of the project including procurement and financial management.
