The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Danube Commission (DC) through a grant agreement, thus enabling the DC to increase its contribution to the implementation of the TEN-T Rhine-Danube Core Network Corridor, as well as to support the European Commission (EC) in achieving the objectives in the Danube Region as formulated in the European Green Deal, the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (SSMS) and the EU Action Plan for Inland Navigation - NAIADES III. The DC is an international, intergovernmental organisation established by the 1948 Belgrade Convention on the Regulation of Navigation on the Danube. It is composed of EU Member States (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia) and non-EU Member States (Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine) sharing the banks of the Danube. It therefore provides an ideal coordination and cooperation platform for the implementation of key EU policy objectives dealing with sustainable mobility of goods in view of climate change in the Danube Region, through targeted harmonisation of EU legislation and enhanced cooperation with neighbouring third countries in line with the development of the TEN-T network. The project has been divided into five thematic work packages and consists of sixteen tasks and subtasks. These tasks correspond to the priorities of the call and take into account the European Union's main interests in creating a sustainable and resilient transport system in the Danube Region, centred on the Danube waterway. The implementation of the project will contribute to economic growth and social stability in the Danube Region, taking into account the new geopolitical dimension created by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The project continues the successful cooperation between the EC and the DC, which started in 2017 and continued in 2020, by covering the implementation period 2023 to 2027.
