Description | Telecel Madagascar received a 15-year national license to build and operate a nationwide AMPS celllular network in 1994. The company began the construction of its network in February 1994 and started its commercial operations in Antananarivo in July 1994. The network covered three cities, Antananarivo, Tamatave, and Antsirabe. Telecel also had its own international gateway using a satellite earth station in Madagascar. As of August 1998, the company was a subsidiary of Telecel International. Telecel International was 80% owned by Orascom of Egypt. By 2004, the company had a negligiable number of subscribers on its AMPS network, being out-competed by GSM providers Orange and Celtel Madagascar. Telecel has not reported any subscribers since 2004. Therefore the 2013 update put the status of this contract as 'canceled'. Information on number of subscribers, investments, not updated for years. |
