The Second Telecommunications Project in Ethiopia will finance a loan to cover most of the foreign exchange cost for the further expansion and improvement of the country's telephone and telegraph services. This project will consist of the extension of automatic telephone exchanges, replacement of the old l,400-line automatic telephone exchanges, along with new 3,000 lines; installation of new automatic telephone exchanges of 500 lines , extension of present manual switchboards, and installation of approximately 50 new manual switchboards with a capacity of 5 to 100 numbers, extension of urban networks and a number of other cities and towns, through the extension of the cable networks and the installation of a new subscriber plant; installation of new radio equipment and links; installation of additional equipment for new domestic and international radio-telegraph circuits; acquisition of land, and construction of buildings for the proper housing of existing and new facilities. This project will increase the capacity and improve the service of all the existing facilities, so that they will be able to meet demand, and to provide telephone and/or telegraph service to towns and areas not yet served.
