Description

On December 21, 2007, the government of Kenya sold for US$390 million a 51% stake in Telkom Kenya to a private consortium formed by France Telecom (78.5%) and Alcazar Capital Limited (21.5%). Telkom Kenya was the national telecom operator and had monopoly on landline services in the country. As of December 2007, Telkom Kenya had 280000 fixed-line customers and it was expected to be granted a mobile license. The award followed a competitive bidding process. In November 2007, four firms had submitted their bids: Reliance of India, Telkom South, Lap Fund of Libya and France Telecom. France Telecom submitted the highest bid. In November 2010, Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK)granted a 3G licence to Telkom Kenya for the amount of US$10 million. Bharti Airtel (formerly Zain) was then granted a 3G licence in July 2010 while Safaricom was granted a 3G licence in 2007, but rival operators complained that the licence fee of US$25 million. In March 2011, Telkom confirmed it had launched FTTH broadband services in Muthaiga and Parlkands, two affluent Nairobi suburbs.
