The project involves the renovation of the Facchini tunnel including the complete demolition of the historical tunnel and the reconstruction of the new one using an innovative construction system in Italy.This construction is situated along the railway stretch connecting the Fegino and Polcevera junctions of the Genoa junction, specifically in the final mile leading to the Ports of Genoa. Spanning a length of 137 m, the new tunnel's profile has been widened and adjusted to accommodate European standard goods trains (PC80/PMO3 gauge), aligning with the expansion plans of the national railway infrastructure and the upcoming link with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi. The reopening of Facchini Tunnel 1 will also facilitate the reinstatement of freight train routes, enabling the previous connection to be utilized once again and relieving the alternative Genoa-Ovada route.
