Description
Description | Biodiversity is in crisis and urgently requires innovative financial mechanisms to harness private investment. Biodiversity credits could become a revenue source for conservation from private capital. However, the biodiversity credit market is still in its infancy, with limited practical experience on their use and an insufficient political framework for scaling up. This project aims to assess biodiversity credit schemes, identify suitable wetlands for their application in Europe and test at least two promising schemes, generating biodiversity credits and validating market acceptance through pilot sales. This will be achieved through the following 6 work packages(WP): WP1. Project Management: Ensuring smooth coordination and delivery of the project. WP2. Benchmarking Schemes: Evaluating current and developing biodiversity credit standards and methodologies for wetlands. WP3. Site Selection: Identifying European wetlands and assessing their suitability for pilot testing. WP4. Pilot Projects: Implementing test projects to generate biodiversity credits. WP5. Market Validation: Facilitating test sales and developing a market platform. WP6. Communication and Scaling: Disseminating results and promoting success factors for scalability. The project will deliver a comprehensive overview of existing and emerging biodiversity certificate and credit schemes, a detailed typology of European wetlands and their suitability for biodiversity credits, and the successful implementation of pilot projects. Biodiversity credit projects will be developed and sold, offering insights into market potential and establishing a foundation for wider adoption. The consortium includes key stakeholders across the entire biodiversity credit value chain: NABU (lead, largest German conservation NGO), Bloom Labs (independent biodiversity credit expert and consultancy), ELO and Eurosite (wetland owners/managers), aeco and Sylva (project developers), and VW Financial Services (pilot customer). |
