Description | Texas has become a major hub for cryptocurrency mining in the United States, with significant power demand from mining operations. In 2024, crypto mining accounted for approximately 2,600 megawatts of power demand, equivalent to the electricity use of the city of Austin on a hot summer day. Additional projects with a combined load of 5,000 megawatts are planned in the Texas service area of utility giant AEP. The state's electricity demand is projected to nearly double by 2030, with Bitcoin mining as a major driver. Lawmakers passed Senate Bill 1929 in 2023 requiring large-scale crypto mines consuming more than 75 megawatts to register with the Public Utility Commission (PUC) by February 2025, but detailed information from these registrations has not been publicly released due to security concerns. |
