A surge in data center requests in Texas has led to more than 220 gigawatts of big projects asking to connect to the Texas electric grid by 2030, with over 70% being data centers. The demand is so high that it is impossible to meet by the end of the decade, causing concerns of a speculative bubble. Texas has enacted legislation requiring developers to pay for initial studies and secure sites to filter serious projects from speculative ones. The Texas Public Utility Commission has proposed a rule requiring data centers to pay security deposits per megawatt of peak power to ensure commitment. The risk exists that infrastructure may be overbuilt for speculative projects that do not materialize, potentially leading to financial losses for investors.
