Description | Texas is experiencing explosive growth in manufacturing and data centers, leading to unprecedented demands on the power grid. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) projects electricity demand could surge to 218 gigawatts by 2031, more than doubling the current peak demand. To address this, Texas has committed over $10 billion through the Texas Energy Fund to finance new natural gas power plants and grid modernization. Thousands of miles of new long-distance transmission lines are also planned, potentially costing more than $30 billion. The planned capacity buildout includes 25-30 new natural gas plants, 50-60 new large-scale solar projects, and 30-40 new battery storage systems, although these will take time to come online. |
