The project aims to support the protection and sustainable use of natural resources in transboundary conservation areas (TFCA) in Southern Africa. The region is home to numerous animal and plant species, including many endangered species such as elephants, rhinos and large predatory cats. This unique flora and fauna is also the livelihood of the local population, which is constantly growing. Together with ongoing climate change and poaching, population growth is putting pressure on ecosystems. The project aims to harmonize the protection of biodiversity with the socio-economic development of the neighboring population in transboundary conservation areas - protection and sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of the population. The project thus addresses three target dimensions: species protection, improved living conditions for the neighboring population and improved management of nature reserves. To achieve this goal, a flexible, demand-oriented and performance-based financing mechanism is being established for the first time, which enables investments in thematically and geographically complementary support measures. The project is sponsored by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Following the EUR 12 million pledged in 2016, a further FC contribution of EUR 11 million is now planned for the first phase. 80% of the funds are earmarked for measures in the three largest TFCAs - KAZA, Great Limpopo, Malawi-Zambia - which together represent 60% of the TFCA area in the SADC region. The first phase is expected to run from 2020 to 2025.
