In order to sustainably support and finance cross-border nature conservation in the SADC region, a total of EUR 23.0 million was pledged by SADC in 2016 and 2019 for the first two phases of the TFCA Financing Facility (TFCA FF). A further EUR 37.0 million is being proposed and reviewed for a reserve audit. A further EUR 8.0 million was pledged by SADC for this purpose in 2021. The funds pledged in 2021 are to be made available to IUCN for the further development of the TFCA Financing Facility (TFCA FF) for a period up to 2027. The concept of the TFCA FF envisages the establishment of an innovative and sustainable financing mechanism that enables flexible, demand- and performance-oriented investments in measures that effectively contribute to ecological, economic, cultural and institutional networking and value creation. Three dimensions should be integrated as far as possible: (i) the connectivity of habitats, especially for elephants and large predators as flagship species (species conservation dimension), (ii) the improvement of the management and governance of TFCAs and protected areas (habitat dimension) and (iii) the improvement of the living conditions of the target group living in coexistence with wild animals (local population dimension).
