Description | The Thane-Borivli twin-tunnel project involves constructing tunnels with two to three lanes in each direction to improve east-west connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project uses six tunnel boring machines (TBMs), including a 13.34-metre-diameter hard rock TBM named Arjun, one of the largest in the country. The tunnel passes underneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) with all environmental and wildlife clearances secured, using zero-vibration technology to avoid ecosystem disturbance. The corridor will integrate with key infrastructure such as the Thane Coastal Road and improve connectivity across Borivli, Dahisar, Andheri, and Goregaon, easing congestion on Ghodbunder Road. |
