The drainage area of the river Thaya lies within the Czech Republic and Austria. In some parts the river forms the boarder. In the cities Vranov, Znojmo and Nové Mlýny, there is a water reservoir and on the boarder there are two national parks. The authorities in both countries are in charge separately for the protection of water and nature. For an optimised water management and for good conditions of water and nature it is necessary to harmonise the approaches. The overall aim of the project is to achieve a scientific and methodological basis for a coordinated development in the region as well as to achieve a better quality of the environment and of the ecosystem services. For this purpose ten cross-border mechanisms will be developed that aim on the harmonisation of the monitoring and the evaluation of the ecological state of the water as well as on the development of the fish population and the improvement of the water morphology. Within the project five elements of the green infrastructure will be created in order to support the morphological diversity of the water, the fish migration and the fish reproduction. These elements are innovative prototype solutions, which can serve as examples not only within the cross-border region. The outputs of the project are conducive for the environment and the diversity around the river Thaya; the results will also be useful for both national parks, the institutions of the water management of both countries (via Donau, Povodí Moravy, s. p.) as well as for people and associations within the fields of environment and nature protection, fishery and hunting. The elements of the green infrastructure and the cross-border mechanisms serve as case studies for universities and scientists. Furthermore the locals and the visitors benefit due to the region´s increased attractiveness. The project outputs serve as a methodological instrument for the institutions of water management to fulfil the EU Water Framework Directive (WRRL), as an instrument for water economic planning and the realisation of the obligations. Both national park administrations will use the project outputs. The cross-border mechanisms are usable for state and local authorities and applicable also outside the project area. The landscape around rivers is not restricted to any administrative or political borders and thus the project focuses on cross-border solutions and uses theoretical foundations that will be worked out together. Measures, undertaken on a cross-border river, need specific solutions. All cross-border mechanisms can be applied in both countries, taking into consideration their specific conditions, and have as a mutual aim to achieve harmonisation.
