Main contractor of the 1.5397-trillion-won projectThe 56.95-kilometer 2nd Yeongdong Expressway linking Gwangjusi in Gyeonggi-do and Wonju-si in Gangwon-do is a mega project valued at 1.5397 trillion won to construct 76 bridges, 12 tunnels, 6 interchanges, 3 junctions and 8 commercial facilities.Along with 16 builders, Hyundai E&C participates in the project on a BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) basis. Responsible for three construction zones among seven, Hyundai E&C has 29.40 percent of the project worth about 202.5 billion won as the main contractor, the most stake among 16 participants, and we has a 100-percent stake in the construction of zone 6. The 6.54-kilometer-long, 23.4-meter-wide road with four lanes is an approximately 113.6-billion-won project to build three bridges and two tunnels.Hyundai E&C received approval for a plan to construct zone 6 of the 2nd Yeongdong Expressway in February 2010 and set out to begin the construction in November 2011. The key constructions in zone 6 include three bridges such as the 605-meter Samsan Bridge, the 70-meter Pandae Bridge I and the 210-meter Pandae Bridge II and two tunnels such as the 615-meter Jijeong Tunnel I and the 2,790-meter Jijeong Tunnel II.Dramatic reduction in travel time between Seoul and WonjuZone 6 was paying the most attention to safety management and quality. The construction site was conducting quality inspections to thoroughly manage defects that may have a direct impact on profits and losses of the project. The concrete pavement often has defective road joints. Joints are placed in the pavement to respond to concrete shrinkage and expansion and become easily defective due to calcium chloride used as a snowmelter. A tremendous effort was put to carry out a series of adequacy tests for admixtures to increase durability of concrete. In addition, the utility tunnel was built in a thorough manner in order to prevent tunnel ceiling cracks resulting from ground sinking and shrinkage and expansion of concrete, and concrete mixture ratio for the concrete lining was optimized to best fit the conditions of the construction site.The opening of the 2nd Yeongdong Expressway serves as a catalyst to develop Wonju into a hub city in the country’s central inland region and vitalize the Wonju Business City and the Wonju Innovation City. The new expressway cuts back on travel time between Seoul and Wonju in Gangwon-do from 77 minutes to 54 minutes, contributing to reducing about 150 billion won of distribution costs and benefiting from environmental improvement worth 26 billion won on an annual basis.Moreover, the 2nd Yeongdong Expressway resolves traffic jams in the chronically congested sections such as Hobeop, Yeoju and Manjong, and the Yicheon-Yeoju-Munmak section, leading to significantly increasing convenience for travelers.
