The archipelago’s sailing vessels

Yachts, ketches, schooners and other small boats were a common sight in the archipelago until the middle of the 1900’s when they were replaced by engine- powered steel ships. During the 1980’s and the 1990’s, the sailing tradition was revived, and in the spring of 2002, representatives for the organisations behind the traditional ships in Finland founded the national organisation (The sailing society) Kustkultur in Finland. The aim and goal with the project ”Skärgårdens segelskutor” was to find new applications for the traditional ships with the goal to improve usage of the ships and to support the archipelago’s tourism companies by means of cooperation with the archipelago’s restaurants, shops, housing companies and ports. Environment- and quality aspects were strongly accented in the project, which would establish common marketing and sales for all ships.
