The collapse of the Alps

The Alps have been stable mountains for thousands of years, but with global warming, the alpine arc warms faster than the rest of the planet (+ 2 degrees in Chamonix since 1936), and because the permafrost which ensures its solidity melts, huge rock walls collapse one after the other, at an increasingly rapid rate.The phenomenon is now observed by scientists, but it is still little known to the general public. Because these phenomena of collapse will accelerate in the coming years, it seems necessary to work to invent other imaginations and representations than those of the disaster. Indeed, disasters produce sideration and tetania, disorganisation and panic, while it is obviously important to take a place and act in the world of global warming: it is necessary to limit its importance as much as possible, but it is also necessary to learn to inhabit this warmer world, which is already there — to make man’s inventive capacity exist, even when large rock masses are in motion.This is how the collapse of the Alps becomes an object of research and artistic experimentation, in a context of great interdisciplinarity, and this phenomenon becomes a heritage thanks to the artistic, cultural and reflexive events that will be proposed.
