Description

Description

EUMER (The EU and MERCOSUR) aims to implement teaching and research on the EU and MERCOSUR and their evolving relationship. Notably, the Module compares the structure of the EU and MERCOSUR and further explores the development of the relationship between these organisations. The project thus explores: (1) EU organisation and functioning; (2) MERCOSUR organisation and functioning; and (3) Relationship between the EU and MERCOSUR, with specific regard to trade, investment and related issues. The topic is particularly timely in the light of the signature and foreseeable ratification of the EU-MERCOSUR Partnership Agreement. The Module is embedded in the Centre for Transnational Relations (LABIRINT) directed by Prof Marcilio Franca at the Federal University of Paraiba (UFPB) in Brazil and connects academics and practitioners based within and outside the EU with interdisciplinary research, teaching and practical experience on the EU, MERCOSUR and international relations. Relying on strategically located sites and deploying advanced pedagogical methodologies, EUMER combines face-to-face and distance learning, via intensive seminars, lectures and tutorials. It targets students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and stakeholders based in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, throughout Brazil, Latin America and the world more broadly. The Module pursues the following objectives: 1. Spreading knowledge on the functioning of the EU, MERCOSUR and the EU-MERCOSUR relationship; 2. Allowing participants to develop a critical approach to the structure of the EU and MERCOSUR; 3. Familiarising participants with the application of IR and international law theories to the interaction between the EU and MERCOSUR; 4. Helping participants to develop a critical vision of EU and MERCOSUR values, policies and objectives in the global context; 5. Creating a permanent transdisciplinary network with a focus on the EU and MERCOSUR.
