The European Integration process from the past to the future

Past2Future responds to the general objectives of the REM call, aiming at commemorating defining events in the modern European history, and at raising awareness among European citizens, of their common history, cultural heritage, and values, thereby enhancing their understanding of the Union, its origins, purpose, diversity, and achievements. In the last decade, the European Union was marked by many crises as the rise of xenophobia and intolerance, extreme political formations, Brexit, the Russia-Ukraine war, influencing the trust in the democratic system. The greatest achievement of the EU was the long-lasting peace for the last 70 years. Past2Future will give an open forum to citizens, young generations, testimonials, researchers, educational stakeholders, and politicians to meet, learn, debate and analyse 8 significant historical events that took place on the European continent in the last century and marked the contemporary European Union – from the Shuman Declaration to the last decade of EU achievements. Using different non-formal instruments as open public debates, historic games, educational visits, storytelling and eyewitnesses’ sessions, the project will allow citizens from the 6 partner countries to understand diverse national experiences on the road to UNITY, but also the common history of Europe and its consequences for the future. Citizens' Paper will be delivered to the EU institutions and MEPs, summarising the participants' findings and recommendations. Past2Future will directly involve 960 citizens from 14 EU Member States, participating in 2 online and 7 in-situ events in Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Malta and Spain. Approximately 7000 citizens will be reached indirectly through the project social media, website, awareness raising campaigns, YouTube, local exhibitions, and street events, so to promote the EU integration process and empower citizens to overcome internal differences & stay united to tackle the trials of our times.
