Description
Description | Since 2008, the world economy and the EU have been shaken by a series of major crises, global financial, Eurozone crisis, Brexit, and COVID-19, with enormous economic and political consequences. Conflict over the distributional costs of the crises and policy responses to them have become defining features of European and international politics. University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Mark Copelovitch seeks a 2022-2025 Jean Monnet Chair to study how these moments of crises in the global economy have also always been moments of opportunity for the EU and European integration. Each has propelled the EU more deeply into a leadership position in global economic governance, standing alongside the US and China as the most important players in international trade, money, and finance. EU scholars have studied extensively the domestic and EU-level politics of economic crises, the EU’s role in the global economy remains a topic in urgent need of more extensive research. A richer understanding of the EU’s power, preferences, and behavior in international economic institutions and global economic governance is essential to both academic knowledge and informed public policy debate about the trade, monetary, and financial issues confronting EU policymakers and national leaders. The program of teaching and research in this application reflects this nexus between Professor Copelovitch’s interests in the EU and his expertise in international political economy. Its three main objectives are: 1) developing a richer understanding of the economic and political consequences of crises for the EU and MSs; 2) enhancing knowledge of the EU’s power, role, and behavior in key international organizations (IMF, WTO); 3) furthering our understanding of the political and economic factors shaping EU relations with other global economic powers (US, China). Progress will be measured in terms of 5 research publications, 3-4 conference presentations, teaching (5-6 courses and advising), media articles |
