The last path of the Templars

The cross-border path of the Templars follows one of the escape routes of the Order of the Temple in the 14th century. It tells the story of a small group of Templars who left Valencienne to hide the treasure in the so-called “terre de débat” border area in Belgium. They knew the northern borders perfectly well because the Commandery of Ypres in Flanders was very important, as was that of St Léger, which was under the yoke of the French king. In the 14th century, a monk from Cambron was appointed to be the transmitter of the Templar knowledge, his aim being to establish a coded map so that the surviving Templars could find the hidden treasure. Within the framework of the micro-project, the different partners wish to highlight and promote this important event in the region’s cross-border history, by putting up signposts along the path taken by the Templars and creating and producing informative and promotional supports for the route.
