The mathematical path to technology

The project is based on the long-term cooperation between the University of South Bohemia in Č. Budějovice and the Johannes Kepler University in Linz in the field of mathematical didactics, with a focus on piquing students' interest in NMS, AHS, BHS and the technical and natural sciences to align with the labor market demand. The project results of the transnational project "Mathematics beyond Borders" (2012 - 2014) were presented to industrial enterprises through universities and chambers of commerce, and they expressed their interest in the innovation of instructional materials related to practical use. Interest was also confirmed by NMS, AHS and BHS and t.re also confirmed. The partner organisations (University of South Bohemia (USB) as the lead partner, JKU and the Chamber of Commerce (WK) South Bohemia) prepared a unique project aimed at establishing a cross-border network for the systematic search for ways and instruments to increase pupils’ interest in the teaching of technical and natural sciences at secondary schools. The main results of the project are the following: - Creation of a set of innovative teaching materials for mathematics at secondary schools in CZ, AT, using computer technology, including the use of the mathematical software GeoGebra. - Establishment of the working groups in the H.- und M. schools, including the involvement of industrial enterprises for the creation of instructional material. - Implementation of cross-border coordination and training activities for organisations and the public (workshops, seminars for teachers, camps for pupils, events for the public). - Establishment and commissioning of the STEM Education Centre at the USD based on the experience with the STEM Centre at the JKU, with the aim of ensuring a systematic and long-term implementation of the project ideas and dissemination of knowledge. The main target groups are educational institutions, their employees and pupils, for whom the project results are primarily intended. The cross-border work is required for successful implementation, since the main exchange of experiences and know-how between the two universities concerns mathematical didactics or experiences with the operation of the STEM Education Centre. The project is not only innovative from the educational institutions’ side (secondary schools), but also from the side of industrial enterprises, coordinated by the chambers of commerce on either side of the border. The seemingly purely academic theme - the attractiveness of the math lesson - is propagated not only on academic grounds (among teachers at secondary schools), but also directly among pupils in the course of the pilot review of the newly formulated documents, and even among the general public.
