Description | The National Road was a major infrastructure project initiated to connect the eastern United States with the western frontier across the Allegheny Mountains. It was built to facilitate the movement of goods and livestock, linking Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), and later extended through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The road was constructed starting in 1811 and completed to Wheeling in 1818, with further extensions completed by the mid-19th century.
