The Next Generation of EU Studies

The objective of this application is to support an intergenerational transition whereby the applicant will share his 40 years of EU lecturing and research experience with a new generation of academics and students prior to anticipated retirement by 2026. The activities of the Chair would cover undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, mentoring of junior staff, research as well as provide academic leadership at the NCRE and through the Asia-Pacific network of EU scholars (EUSAAP). Building on previous Chair awards, including a Jean Monnet Chair ad personam, I am uniquely placed within the region to profile and demonstrate the value and impact of the programme. Academic staff beneficiaries would include the applicant and up to three junior academics; student beneficiaries enrolled in EU courses would be at the undergraduate (50 per year) and postgraduate (10 per year) levels. Media and public commentary would also undertaken as necessary. The results of the Chair activities would be the successful transfer of four decades of experience/ lecture materials on EU integration to the next generation of emerging academics. Around 200 students would increase their knowledge of the EU over the life of the Chair. Building on the anticipated completion of the the EU-NZ FTA in 2022 the Chair's activities can raise public and media awareness and understanding of the EU in general. Teaching outputs would take the form of the IP transfer of four complete series of PowerPoint lectures for the courses covered by the Chair so that on retirement (by 2026) these course can be taught by the next generation of early career academics. Research outputs would take the form of local and international articles/ edited volumes as well as podcasts hosted on the NCRE's homepage related to EU-NZ relations.
