The Same but Different

Within “The Same but Different” project, The Old Lion Publishing House plans to translate, distribute, place, and promote five quality titles intended mostly for young adults. Our goal is distinct – to enrich the fund with children’s literature that is largely underrepresented and whose current production does not fulfill the vast interest and needs of this curious audience. The objective of the project is to tell the children about inclusion. There are people – first of all, children – who live among us, and whose existence we are well aware of, but we do not like to notice how difficult their lives are. Complex cultural and social convictions are the reason we are unable to help them. These are special people with specific needs, physically and mentally challenged. How should one explain to a child why a person moves in a wheelchair? Why is someone able to hear with the use of special devices in their ears that resemble spies’ gadgets? Imagine how much a child would be overwhelmed by the fact that some people talk with their hands, and some read with their fingers. It is worth explaining to the child that this is because people are different. And this is precisely why each of us matters. Each book of our project will be a guide to the world of diversity for children and a helper for adults who are sometimes embarrassed by children's questions.
