Description
Description | the sustainable institution is a cooperative 3-phase project which seeks to identify, confront and propose solutions to the ecological and economic challenges the creative industry faces. the sustainable institution will manifest as an international symposium series, transdisciplinary artist residency and digital toolkit. The programme is a call to action to innovate new sustainable approaches and stimulate human, economic and ecological change to the cultural landscape. The symposium series will take place at LUMA Arles, France, Rupert Centre for Art and Education, Lithuania and E-WERK Luckenwalde, Germany and bring together interdisciplinary thinkers to collaboratively create positive sustainable transformation and tangible solutions for the cultural sector. the sustainable institution artist residency is an opportunity for creative practitioners to produce new solutions in the fight against climate change and mitigate the environmental burden of exhibition making. Three creative practitioners will be selected to develop a prototype for sustainable exhibition making, supported by a mentored 6 month research and development period and studio for 6 weeks. The toolkit is an open resource and tool for culture to improve ecological, economic and human sustainability. In collaboration with Gallery Climate Coalition, the toolkit presents the project’s carbon calculation in addition to prototypes, symposium excerpts, performances, actionable guidelines and a collection of established resources. This is available online to the public, who can use the tools for their own transformation towards sustainability. Audiences will be reached via an international press campaign, print and digital marketing campaign and on site events at each institution (symposiums, artist talks, tours). This project seeks to engage an online readership of 1.5 million readers, and on-site audiences of 5000+. The consortium seeks to engage audiences across diverse sectors including contemporary art, politics, design, environmental activism, innovation and technology. The consortium intends to achieve this through its interdisciplinary programme outlined above. the sustainable institution aims to raise awareness of the carbon impact of the cultural sector and offer real tangible solutions for reducing carbon emissions in relation to travel, creative production and digital activity. The consortium also intends to provide 3 contemporary creative practitioners with the opportunity to develop a real prototype towards sustainable exhibition making. |
