Description

Description

A modern electricity sector based on renewable energies plays a central role in the Ivorian government's development and climate strategies. As part of a reform partnership, the German federal government is supporting the Ivorian government in driving forward this energy transition in the spirit of a just transition and improving the foundations for economic, social and climate-friendly development. The Energy for the Sustainable Development of Eastern Côte d'Ivoire project, which is being implemented by the state-run CI-ENERGIES, aims to improve the quality of the electricity supply in the Iffou region. Here, only around 39% of households have access to the national electricity grid; households and companies are affected by severe power fluctuations and outages. Against this background, the project includes investments in three complementary components: 1. Construction of a grid-connected solar power plant (25 MWp in phase 1) with battery storage in Sérébou 2. Construction of a control room to automate the distribution network in the east of Côte d'Ivoire 3. Expansion, reinforcement and densification of the distribution network in 15 cities in the Iffou region. The project will save emissions amounting to around 44,500t of CO2 per year. Battery storage and the modernization of the network will significantly reduce the number and length of power outages and fluctuations. Due to the additional generation capacity, electricity will be produced for around 52,000 additional electricity consumers, and the network expansion in Iffou will provide access for around 14,000 additional households.
